Ethiopia is set to host the COP32 climate summit in two years. But it is unclear where next year's meeting will be held – Australia or Turkey? Or Bonn, Germany?

Delegates at this year's meeting in Belém, Brazil, have yet to decide where the next two meetings will be held. But behind the scenes, Addis Ababa, the capital of Ethiopia, has effectively already been decided for 2027.

The African countries are advocating for Ethiopia, and there is no opposing candidate, several news agencies report.

All the greater uncertainty applies to next year's meeting, COP31.

Focus on the South Seas

The Australians, who want to hold the meeting in Adelaide, have been confident for months of being able to host. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese wants to improve the image of a country with many large emissions, and hosting was one of his promises before the election in May.

According to the media company ABC , his ambition is for the meeting to draw attention to the climate threats facing the Southern Ocean countries – and thereby give Australia a lot of goodwill in the many island nations and advance the country's positions there.

But what seemed certain has become a question mark this autumn. Turkey has also raised its hand and wants Antalya to host next year.

Will it be Bonn?

ABC reports on feverish diplomacy between the countries to find a compromise. If Turkey does not drop out, could the countries perhaps share the meeting? It is clear in any case that Turkey is advancing its positions and according to the BBC, the country is sending more powerful representatives than Australia to the climate negotiations in Brazil.

The meeting in Belém must make a decision, and according to AFP, it must be unanimous. If the countries cannot agree, next year's meeting will otherwise be held in Bonn, Germany, where the UN Climate Convention is headquartered.

The 2017 climate summit was held in Bonn, then under the presidency of Fiji.

The UN climate summits, COP, are held in different locations each year. COP stands for "Conference of the Parties" and refers to the parties to the UN Climate Convention.

The first climate summit COP1 was held in Berlin, Germany, in 1995.

At the meeting in Kyoto, Japan in 1997, the first global climate agreement, the Kyoto Protocol, was negotiated.

In the 2015 Paris Agreement, most of the world's countries agreed to keep the increase in global average temperature well below 2 degrees, and preferably below 1.5 degrees, compared to pre-industrial times. This will be done primarily by reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

COP30 will be held in Belém, Brazil, from November 10 to 21.
