The Mexican Football Federation has both fined and issued a written warning to Javier ”Chicharito” Hernandez, who currently plays for the Liga MX club Chivas.
According to FMF, Hernandez has made statements on TikTok that "promote sexist stereotypes and go against equality in sports".
Hernandez expressed, among other things, that today's women are "failures" and that they "eradicate masculinity".
Being investigated now
Do not be afraid to be women, to let yourselves be led by a man, said the former national team captain, which led to harsh criticism in Mexico.
In a joint statement, FMF and the country's top men's and women's leagues state that an investigation has been initiated through the commission for equality and diversity.
The purpose is to prevent and punish this type of behavior, and they warn that "more serious measures will be taken in case of repeated offenses".
His club Chivas also distances itself from the statements and announces that "appropriate measures" have been taken, without specifying any details.
"Regret"
Javier Hernandez himself is remorseful in a statement via Instagram:
"I deeply regret the confusion or discomfort that my recent words may have caused. It was never my intention to limit, hurt or divide. I will take this opportunity to understand, grow and continue working to become a better version of myself”.
Hernandez, who is Mexico's best goal scorer of all time, broke through in Europe when he was recruited by Manchester United in 2010. During four years at Old Trafford, he won two Premier League titles.
Then followed games in, among others, Real Madrid, Bayer Leverkusen, West Ham, Sevilla, and Los Angeles Galaxy, before he returned to his parent club Chivas in 2023.
