A patient died from complications of advanced lower abdominal cancer. It was only after a year of repeated healthcare contacts that the cancer was diagnosed, and Region Västerbotten reported the case under Lex Maria.

The multimorbid patient sought medical attention for urinary tract complaints. These were assessed as recurrent urinary tract infections, and treatment was prescribed.

By the time the cancer diagnosis was made, after the patient had sought help several times, it was too late, and the patient died after a period of palliative care.

An analysis shows that deficiencies in the clinical assessment and examination of the patient caused a delay in diagnosis and treatment, Region Västerbotten writes in a press release.

It will now be up to the Swedish Health and Social Care Inspectorate (Ivo) to assess the incident.
