The ruling Liberal Party seemed to be heading for a defeat, with dwindling confidence figures for the former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

When Trudeau resigned in early January, the party was behind the Conservative Party by over 20 percentage points. In the latest measurements, it has a small lead and Trudeau's replacement Mark Carney appears to be able to retain the prime ministerial post.

We don't need chaos, we need calm and quiet. We don't need anger, we need someone adult, said Carney, former central bank governor in Canada and the UK, in a speech the other day.

As the Trump administration in the USA has started a trade war and referred to Canada as a "51st state", Carney has emphasized that the neighboring country in the south can no longer be trusted.

The leader of the Conservative Party, Pierre Poilievre, has a more blunt and populist approach with a strong focus on wallet issues. This and his accusations of long-term liberal failure led many to draw parallels to Donald Trump.

You won't be able to handle four more years of this, said Poilievre in a campaign speech over the weekend, referring to a liberal government.

The 45-year-old opposition leader has also criticized the US President, but emphasizes that the Liberal Party has made Canada particularly vulnerable to such attacks.
