Emergency accommodation and long-term housing support will be introduced across the country this winter. The areas with the biggest problems with homelessness and housing shortages will receive the largest share of the increased funding of £442 million, approximately 5.72 billion Swedish kronor.

"No one should have to sleep in a doorway or outside a station," Burnham said in a statement.

According to official statistics, 4,793 people slept rough in England last year - a trend that shows no signs of reversing. According to the think tank Institute for Public Policy Research, the number could increase by 25 percent by 2030.

Andy Burnham took office a month ago after former Prime Minister Keir Starmer resigned.
