Sweden's border controls on travelers from Denmark are called temporary, but they have been in place for ten years. For those who commute by train across the Öresund, they cost 510,000 extra hours on the train a year, according to a new report.

Greater Copenhagen, an organization that brings together municipalities and regions in southern Sweden and eastern Denmark, condemns the border control as "expensive, ineffective and possibly in violation of EU rules."

According to the report, it results in a socio-economic loss of 47 million Swedish kronor per year.

Trains must stand still at Hyllie station on the Swedish side for four extra minutes per journey to allow the police to check the passengers' IDs. The report also points out that an additional five trains per hour could have crossed the Öresund Bridge in each direction if it had not been for the checks.

The report also refers to police figures showing that only 0.03 percent of the people checked at the internal border control in the South region lack valid ID.
