The German vehicle group BMW is recalling over 331,000 cars in Germany and the USA due to a fault in the starter motor, reports Bloomberg.

The problem, which affects several models built between 2015 and 2021, means that the starter motor can catch fire due to possible corrosion caused by water leakage. In the "worst case" the fault can lead to a short circuit and fire, according to a press release from BMW.

The company must now inspect 195,000 cars in the USA and 136,000 in Germany.

The recall is yet another setback for BMW. Last year, 1.5 million cars were recalled to fix a brake fault. The costs led to the company issuing a profit warning.

According to the US traffic safety authority, among others, the BMW models 330i, Z4, 530i, X3 and X4 are affected, writes CBS News.
