The Blue Flag is an international award that has existed in Sweden since 1994. It is awarded by the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE) and shows that the facilities meet high standards for water quality, environment, education, safety, service, and accessibility.
The thing that stands out for the Blue Flag is that the main focus is to get all these things in place, but also to inform your guests and try to give them knowledge about nature and the environment and sustainability in general. It's perhaps what sets this environmental marking apart from many others, says Henrik Alsén, responsible for the Blue Flag in Sweden.
It can be about helping guests take responsibility, for example, by informing about consideration for animals and nature, offering environmentally marked products or making waste management easier.
The Blue Flag must be reapplied for every year. A jury decides which facilities are approved to fly the blue flag and control visits are carried out at all facilities.
This year, the Blue Flag is found on over 5,000 beaches and marinas in 51 countries around the world.
