150,000 laying hens will be put down after bird flu has been detected in Danish Fredericia, announces Fødevarestyrelsen, Denmark's equivalent to the National Food Agency.

The State Serum Institute confirmed on Tuesday evening that the highly contagious disease has broken out and that increased mortality and signs of disease have been found among the animals.

The culling will begin on Wednesday and will be carried out as soon as possible to avoid further spread of the disease.

The outbreak is the first in Denmark since April this year.
