In the two-part documentary, among others, Bruce Springsteen, Pink and Paul McCartney participate. In the trailer for the film, Springsteen acknowledges without hesitation that "Billy's melodies are better than mine".
McCartney tells about his first meeting with the singer:
When I heard Billy Joel for the first time, it was just, wait a minute, 'who is this?'
"And so it goes" had its premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival in June. The 76-year-old Joel could not attend himself, however, since he had recently been diagnosed with a brain disease that had given him trouble with his vision, hearing, and balance.
Difficult lessons
In the documentary, Billy Joel shares both brighter and darker moments in his life.
- I have had many difficult lessons in my life. There are traumas that linger, but I learned to transform them into music magic. Everything I have done and everything I have experienced has somehow found its way into my music, he says.
Two-part documentary
He also says that he has no explanation for how his first band, Hassles, ever became so successful ("I do not know a single person who liked what we did") or how he ended up in a relationship with supermodel Christie Brinkley ("Me? I come from Hicksville").
The first part of the film, directed by Susan Lacy and Jessica Levin, premieres on HBO on July 18, followed by part two on July 25, writes Rolling Stone.
