A 47-year-old man died of hydrogen sulfide poisoning at a cardboard factory in Lindesberg, a few miles north of Örebro, two years ago. His partner has told NA that the man had complained of dizziness, nausea, and headaches in the days leading up to his death. A sign that he was already exposed to the gases, she believes.

The investigation is now complete, and the prosecutor is bringing charges against the company for gross negligence leading to another's death.

"I believe that the person or persons responsible for safety at the company, through negligence, have caused the employee's death, as there were deficiencies in the continuous monitoring of the implementation of issued instructions and in providing employees with the training needed to prevent the death," says Chief Prosecutor Carl-Gunnar Fridolfsson in a press release.

The prosecutor is demanding 17.4 million kronor in damages, which is a high amount in this context. Billerud is accepting the fine and states that they have cooperated with the police and prosecutor during the investigation.

"Two years is a long time, and it has been tough for everyone involved. On a day like this, I think extra about our colleague's family and our other employees," says CEO Ivar Vatne in a press release.

Corrected version: In an earlier version, an incorrect description of the location of the factory appeared.
