The national team's head coach believes that the 19-year-old championship debutant's medal is something unique in Swedish athletics history.
I think it's the most sensational medal in modern athletics history, says Kajsa Bergqvist.
The former high jump star, who has taken medals in the Olympic Games, World Championship, and European Championship, and has held the world record, praises not only Nilsson's athletic talent but also her mental maturity.
I hadn't taken any European Championship medals at that age. That's all I can say.
We have a super talent. There are many who have it in their legs, but she has it in her head too. I'm incredibly impressed.
Bergqvist's words get stuck in her throat when she talks about Nilsson.
It's obviously clear that you have a special relationship to high jump and my own journey when you see someone who you just "Oh, she can be the next one to do it". It's like it shouldn't really be possible what she does.
Bergqvist had counted on three, four Swedish medals during the indoor European Championship. It became three: two silvers, Henrik Larsson on 60 meters and Wictor Petersson in shot put, and Nilsson's bronze in high jump. In Istanbul two years ago, it became four: one silver and three bronzes.
The outcome was roughly what you could have expected. But it didn't turn out as the most likely scenario. That we would take a high jump medal was a high odds bet that I don't think many believed in, says the head coach.
