Belgian Prime Minister Bart De Wever Resigns After Budget Talks Collapse, King Philippe Holds Off on Decision

Belgian Prime Minister Bart De Wever has submitted his resignation after budget negotiations broke down. King Philippe has not yet accepted it.

The attempt to reach an agreement on the country’s budget ended abruptly just after midnight, the Belgian newspaper Le Soir reports. On Monday morning, De Wever went to the palace in Brussels to submit his resignation to King Philippe.

But the king is holding off on making a decision. A statement from the court says King Philippe is “considering” the matter and will begin talks with the governing coalition’s party leaders on Tuesday. He will receive De Wever again on Friday.

In the statement, the king regrets the “lack of unity” in reaching a budget agreement. At the same time, he emphasizes that the country cannot afford a prolonged political crisis, Le Soir reports.
