The Australian Open tennis tournament has begun. The heat caused immediate problems when a ball girl collapsed. She was led off the court with help from players and officials.

A young ball girl fainted during a match between Turkey's Zeynep Sönmez and Russia's Ekaterina Alexandrova. It happened when Alexandrova, ranked 11th in the world, was serving in the second set.

The ball girl then fell backwards, seemingly affected by the heat, as she stood below the referee's chair in the sun.

Sönmez immediately ran to help, while Alexandrova retrieved ice packs from a refrigerator by the court. The ball girl then received medical attention and could be led off the court.

The game had to be suspended for several minutes.

When play resumed, Sönmez went on to win 2–1 in sets (7–5, 4–6, 6–4).

Temperatures have soared above 40 degrees Celsius during previous editions of the Australian Open, with forecasts indicating they could reach at least 36 degrees Celsius next week.
