The government proposes expanding checks on people to be employed in schools. More crimes will be included in criminal record extracts, and extracts from the suspect register will also be required.

Minister of Education and Integration Simona Mohamsson (L) presents the legislative council's recommendation at a press conference with other government parties and the Sweden Democrats.

There will be tougher background checks on adults at schools, she said.

So far, the extracts have been able to list convictions for child pornography, serious violent crimes, terrorist crimes or recruiting young people to commit crimes. The government wants to add more crimes - such as child endangerment, offensive photography, crimes of honor, female genital mutilation and weapons offences.

The government is proposing an amendment to the Education Act that will facilitate the exchange of information between schools for crime prevention purposes. This could, for example, apply to information about a student's connections to organized crime, when the student changes schools.
