Further people have been seriously injured, according to Spanish media.
Apparently, there was a fault on the drive wheel of one of the chairlifts, which caused the cable to lose tension, resulting in some chairs falling and others still hanging, says Miguel Ángel Clavero from the rescue service to Spanish TVE.
Five helicopters and about ten ambulances were called to the scene to transport the injured people to nearby hospitals.
Suddenly, we heard a sound and we fell straight towards the ground, inside the chair. We bounced up and down about five times, says María Moreno to TVE.
But people fell out of the chairs, she says, and adds that "the truth is that we were very scared".
According to the police, the accident led to a cable breaking loose, causing chairlifts with skiers to crash from a height of 15 meters. At the same time, up to 100 people are said to have been left hanging in the air in parts of the lift that did not collapse.
"Our thoughts are with the injured and their families", writes Spain's Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez in a comment on X.
