Torrential rains have caused flooding and landslides in southwestern Ethiopia. 30 deaths have been reported by the top political leader of the Southern Ethiopia region, Tilahun Kebede.
"Given that it is the rainy season and these kinds of disasters can happen, I would like to urge communities in the highlands and areas at risk of flooding to take necessary and preventive measures," he wrote on Facebook.
The rainy season in Ethiopia extends throughout the summer, but in the southern parts of the country the torrential rains arrive earlier in the spring. In recent years, storms have become increasingly violent as they have been intensified by climate change.
In the summer of 2024, rains caused huge landslides in southern Ethiopia, killing at least 257 people.
