The leading exchanges in Asia began Thursday's trading in different directions in a situation where investors are pondering President Donald Trump's next move regarding tariff policy.
In Tokyo, the Nikkei 225 had fallen by 0.7 percent at lunchtime, while the broader Topix index lost 0.4 percent.
It was not cheerful in Hong Kong either, where the Hang Seng index lost 0.4 percent.
Somewhat more cheerful tones were heard from Shenzhen's composite index, which rose 0.2 percent, while the composite index in Shanghai had difficulty choosing foot and therefore fluctuated around zero.
In South Korea, they chose joy and the Kospi index therefore rose by 0.7 percent.
