Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson (The Moderate Party) does not rule out going forward with a ban on burka and niqab, as The Christian Democrats leader Ebba Busch has proposed.

Busch wants to see a total ban in public environments for burka and niqab – garments worn by some Muslim women and which cover parts or the entire face.

I think it breaks with everything that Swedish equality and equality stand for. I do not rule out going much further than what we have done so far in Sweden, says Kristersson on his way to the party leader debate in the SVT house.

He says he is concerned about recurring stories from disadvantaged areas about people who "in practice are forced to cover and hide themselves".

S prepared to discuss

Opposition leader Magdalena Andersson (S) says that the garments are "expressions of women's and honor oppression"

And that's something we social democrats take a stand against. Exactly how to deal with it, I am prepared to discuss and look at, says Magdalena Andersson on her way into tonight's party leader debate in the SVT house.

Daniel Helldén, spokesperson for the Green party, thinks that Busch's proposal is going too far.

I can agree that that type of clothing is problematic, absolutely. But to forbid certain types of clothing, you don't do that in a democracy.

Center Party leader Anna-Karin Hatt says she does not have much sympathy for either burka or niqab:

But it is obvious that Ebba Busch wants to focus on women who cover their faces simply to cover up the Christian Democrats' and the government's failed integration policy.

Åkesson: Approaching

The Left Party's Nooshi Dadgostar would rather talk about healthcare.

Ebba Busch has also spoken about the jeans ban in the Riksdag. She has now spoken about other types of clothing. I understand that she wants to talk about everything else except the growing healthcare queues, she says.

The Sweden Democrats' Jimmie Åkesson says he has long been in favor of a ban and that the Sweden Democrats were alone in raising it during the negotiations for the Tidö Agreement.

So now it's good, now it's approaching that we can get it into the next Tidö Agreement, says Åkesson.
