The American Alistair Docherty plays his first golf major in the US Open at Oakmont Country Club outside Pittsburgh. Just a month after being involved in a serious traffic accident.

My car spun a few rounds. I felt glass and everything coming towards me. I got out of the car a bit dizzy, and I was covered in blood and glass, says Docherty. On a picture from the hospital, the golfer is seen wearing a neck brace, but Docherty explains that he managed to avoid serious injuries. His shoulders and legs took the worst hit, but with hard work with the help of a physical therapist, the 31-year-old has managed to recover in time for his career's first major. It was at the end of May that Docherty was hit from the side in an intersection by a car that ran a red light. On June 2, he qualified for the US Open. It's not a miracle. I'm very grateful, but this is definitely where I think I'm meant to be. Everything works out for a reason, I'm just trying to make the most of it, says Docherty. This is a great test to see where my game is right now. If you show up with the mindset "I don't have a chance here," then it's over. So I think I have a chance to play my best and see how far it takes me. US Open started today.
