There will be hydration breaks in all matches in the men's World Cup next year. And that applies regardless of the temperature.

When the match clock reaches 22 minutes, the referee will blow the whistle for a three-minute refreshment break. The new rule will be implemented in all halves and in all matches during the World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico next year, the International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) said.

It should be seen as a simplified version of FIFA's previous stance, where players had the opportunity to have fluid breaks after half an hour of play on particularly hot days.

During the 2026 World Cup, the rule will be used regardless of the weather, and regardless of whether the stadium in question has a roof or air conditioning.

The change comes against the backdrop of this summer's Club World Cup in the United States, when the sometimes extreme heat waves took a toll on the players.
