Hallam's first squad after the Olympic disappointment in February - an exit in the quarterfinals - is also the first of two steps before the World Cup in Switzerland.
First comes next week's Fortuna Hockey Games in Jönköping and České Budějovice, Czech Republic.
Then, after a thinning, the Beijer Hockey Games in Ängelholm May 7-10.
Sam Hallam's plan was actually for Viggo Björck to play in the home tournament in Ängelholm. However, his choice to complete the U20 final series with Djurgården - a victory against Frölunda - meant that he was not allowed to play in the U18 World Cup and thus he became available the following week.
"I called Viggo a few weeks ago to check on the situation. At the time, he was set for the U18 World Championships, but when the opportunity arose, I called him straight away," says Hallam.
“The smartest player”
Hallam is full of admiration for the 18-year-old who, together with Anton Frondell, was one of Djurgården's best players at the end of the season.
"Maybe the smartest player. It's incredibly impressive to follow Viggo. With a player like Viggo on the ice, the game usually moves in the right direction. He is useful both on the power play and when shorthanded, and he's right-handed. He has so many qualities that make him so useful," says Hallam.
The other five JVM gold players who have been selected for Tre Kronor are goalkeeper Love Härenstam, defenseman Sascha Boumedienne and forwards Jack Berglund, Ivar Stenberg and Anton Frondell, who has impressed in the NHL where he completed the season with Chicago.
"We have followed them in their club teams and at the Junior World Cup. It was a very strong team with very good players, and we see that in how they have positioned themselves in their NHL draft or upcoming draft," says Sam Hallam.
NHL players without guarantees
Three NHL players from Vancouver are included - Nils Höglander, Linus Karlsson and Liam Öhgren. None of them are guaranteed World Cup games but they participate on the same terms as the rest of the team.
Sam Hallam says that with the compressed NHL season, the Olympic players will not be the backbone of the upcoming World Cup team, but rather those who did not play in the Olympics.
"I probably saw the squad as a mix, but some injuries have affected it a bit. Then it's been so close for the wild card spots (for the playoffs) that it has been very difficult to know in advance who is available. But I don't rule out all the Olympic players," he says.
