The electoral authority said on Saturday, local time, that independent Peruvian and international experts will conduct a "complete and thorough IT audit of the electoral process."
This is to strengthen the "transparency, integrity and credibility of the election results."
With 97 percent of the votes counted, Keiko Fujimori, the daughter of the former president, leads with 17 percent. Behind her is a close race between leftist candidate Roberto Sánchez Palomino and ultra-conservative Rafael López Aliaga, each with about 12 percent.
The chaotic election had to be extended in several places due to a shortage of materials. Four people have been arrested on suspicion of violating election laws.
