One of the channel's anchors said on air in March this year, several times, incorrectly that Trump was found guilty of rape in a civil lawsuit, while the correct term was sexual assault. Trump sued the channel immediately.

The judge in the case, where writer Jean E Carroll sued Trump for assaulting her in a dressing room at a department store in New York in the 1990s, stated in court that what Trump was found guilty of did not meet the law's strict and narrow definition of rape.

Trump was sentenced to pay a large sum in damages to Carroll for sexual assault, as well as for defaming her in connection with her telling about the incident in her memoirs in 2019.

ABC also apologizes on its website for anchor George Stephanopoulos' incorrect statement about what Trump did according to the verdict.

The channel will also cover Trump's legal fees of one million dollars, nearly eleven million Swedish kronor. Together with the donation, it will be around 176 million kronor that ABC will have to pay out within ten days.
