The earthquake occurred in the province of Cebu in the central parts of the country, according to the American Geological Institute USGS. After several hours of searching and rescue efforts, local authorities said that at least 20 people had been killed, but that the total extent of the damage was still unknown.
There may be people who are trapped under rubble, said the person in charge of the rescue efforts, Wilson Ramos on Tuesday.
The epicenter of the earthquake was adjusted slightly during Tuesday evening, and is believed to have been just outside the city of Bogo.
The earthquake was initially measured to have been stronger than 6.9, but did not cause any tsunami wave according to the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center.
