In addition to murder and aggravated assault, he was also convicted of aggravated fraud for draining the victim's accounts.
When the colleague, who was in his 25s, was reported missing at the end of January last year, the police checked his finances and discovered transfers to the 27-year-old's accounts.
Even before the murder, the colleague had lent money to the 27-year-old, and after the murder more such transactions were made.
When the 27-year-old became a suspect, he had already gone abroad, but the police searched his apartment and made macabre findings: body parts in the freezer and blood on the floor.
Returned voluntarily
When the 27-year-old returned to Sweden later in the spring, he was arrested at Arlanda.
The fact that he voluntarily returned to Sweden has been presented by his defense lawyer as an argument for his innocence.
The man denies the murder and dismemberment and claims that the crimes were committed by another person - but this person never existed, the court has concluded.
Deep stab wounds
Not all of the deceased's remains have been found, and therefore the cause of death has not been fully determined. However, according to the coroner, he suffered deep stab wounds that contributed to his death.
"The cause of death has not been determined, but in practice it does not need to be completely clear how a person died in order to be convicted of murder, if it can still be said that it was a contributing factor," said prosecutor Emma Olsson.
She notes that the court has completely sided with her. In addition to life imprisonment, the 27-year-old is also sentenced to deportation.
His defense attorney declines to comment on the verdict.
