This is according to a compilation by the European Earth observation program Copernicus through November. The month of November was 1.54 degrees warmer than pre-industrial times, the third warmest November month to date.
The average temperature for January–November is 1.48 degrees warmer than the 1850–1900 average, which is identical to the entire year 2023. Although the entire year this year looks set to fall below 1.5 degrees, the three-year period 2023–2025 looks set to fall above the 1.5 degree limit that the world's countries agreed to in the Paris Agreement for the first time.
“These milestones are not abstract – they reflect the increasing pace of climate change and the only way to limit future increases in temperatures is to rapidly reduce greenhouse gas emissions,” says Copernicus Climate Director Samantha Burgess in a press release.
