Already at the end of October, much indicated that 2024 would mean a new heat record. After an unusually warm November, it is now clear that the past year has been the warmest recorded.
November 2024 is the second-warmest November month measured globally and was 1.62 degrees Celsius above the pre-industrial level.
The long-term goal of the Paris Agreement is to keep the global temperature increase well below 2 degrees with a target of 1.5 degrees, to limit the damage and losses that climate change is expected to bring.
2024 is the first calendar year with over 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels.
"It doesn't mean that the Paris Agreement has been broken, but it means that ambitious climate actions are more urgent than ever," says Samantha Burgess, Deputy Director of Copernicus in a press release.
