Nearly 200,000 people in western Japan are urged to evacuate due to the risk of flooding and landslides in the wake of a tropical storm.
Warm and humid air causes heavy rainfall after Typhoon Kong-rey, which has now been downgraded to a tropical low-pressure system, according to the meteorological institute. A warning at the highest level has been issued for the city of Matsuyama, and around 190,000 residents are urged to immediately seek safety.
The risk of landslides and flooding applies to western Japan on Saturday and eastern Japan on Sunday. Train traffic between Tokyo and the Fukuoka region in the south has been cancelled.
Kong-rey made landfall in Taiwan on Thursday. At least two fatalities have been reported.
