Borlänge Municipality has called a press conference at 11 a.m., which the police will also attend.
Six preschools, four elementary schools, a municipal adult education center and five upper secondary schools in central Borlänge are closed.
"We have chosen to act proactively. Our focus is to ensure a safe environment for our students and employees, and while waiting for the situation to be clarified, we are therefore keeping selected schools closed," says Municipal Director Jörgen Olsson in a press release.
"Late last night we received what we perceive as a potential threat. Based on that, we have decided to implement a precautionary measure," Jörgen Olsson tells TT.
The decision to close the schools is the municipality's own, according to Jörgen Olsson, who declined to say what the actual threat is. The municipality is in dialogue with the police.
We have initiated a preliminary investigation into a serious unlawful threat against a group, says Anders Dahlman, press spokesperson for the Bergslagen police.
The threat was directed at schools in Borlänge, he says, but declined to give details.
We are looking further to see if there is any substance to this, says Anders Dahlman, who does not know if there is a suspect.
We will work to ensure security, with both external and internal reconnaissance.
No teaching
No teaching or care will take place on the premises of the schools that are closed.
"The municipality's crisis organization is activated and is working in close dialogue with the police, who have been informed of the municipality's decision," the municipality writes.
"We have been told that we will be keeping the school closed. We have information that has been posted on school platforms informing students that they should not come to school today," says Robert Schultz, principal at Hushagsgymnasiet.
Worked quickly
The same information has been sent to Maserskolan in Borlänge, says the school's principal Angelica Calawagan Wikblad.
This information went out to staff and guardians at around 6 a.m. this morning. We have had to work quite quickly and efficiently to get the information out before they have time to arrive at the schools.
What do you think about this?
It is clear that we need to take this seriously and that safety and security come first. Time will tell what we come up with, but we should not compromise on safety.
Have there been any hints that something like this would happen?
No, nothing I can answer.
