Lingnåre culture reserve preserves traces of homes, cultivation and burial sites left by people who lived here in Viking times and older medieval times. The remains sit within an old cultural setting, according to Visit Sweden. The reserve’s eastern fields and meadows were a shallow sea bay during the Viking Age.
Visitors can see the preserved traces and look over open fields grazed by cows. Extensive clearing and cutting young forest opened the views across the fields. The old ground supports varied plant life and many kinds of butterflies, including unusual ones. The meadows are mown late each year, a practice that maintains habitats for plants and butterflies. The Visit Sweden description also names a meadow plant as the host plant for an unusual butterfly.
Lingnåre brings together evidence of settlement, cultivation and burial with present-day grazing and meadow care. The difference between the former sea bay and today’s open fields is part of what visitors can see here. The cows graze the fields, and late mowing continues in the meadows.
