The Stockholm City Hall Tower is closed to visitors this week. Visit Stockholm says the tower is normally open during the summer season, from May to mid-August, and that it closed to visitors after the 2026 season for planned renovation. The city’s tower page also says it is closed to visitors and gives an expected reopening in 2029. It says renovation work is scheduled to start in early 2027 and finish at the end of 2028.

When open, the 106-metre tower is climbed by stairs and sloped passageways, with 365 steps to the top. An elevator reaches only the middle level, so visitors must climb stairs for the rest of the ascent. From the top, visitors can see central Stockholm. Halfway up, the Tower Museum displays sketches and models of objects, statues and details from City Hall and City Hall Park. The tower has stood for more than a hundred years. The city says the renovation is intended to help preserve it for at least another century.

Good to know

When the tower is open, expect stairs for the final climb: the elevator reaches only the middle level.
