Riddarholmen Church is Stockholm’s only preserved medieval abbey, built in the late 1200s. It is a burial and memorial church for Swedish monarchs and aristocracy. For an ordinary visit, it is outside its May-to-September visitor season this week. The church can also be visited during concerts, Order of the Seraphim bell ringings or by special arrangement, and it has an annual concert programme.
The tombs include medieval kings Magnus Ladulås and Karl Knutson Bonde, who died in 1470. With the exception of Queen Christina, Sweden’s rulers from Gustav II Adolf, who died in 1632, to Gustaf V, who died in 1950, are buried here. Visit Stockholm also lists Karl XII and the monarchs’ consorts among those buried in the church.
The church is not a parish church, so christenings and weddings are not held there. Its spire is being renovated from autumn 2025 through 2028. The renovation affects the exterior, while the church is due to remain open as usual during the summer visitor season.
