S/S Orion was built in 1929 at Helsingborg Varfs AB as a steam service vessel for the Royal Pilot Service, after lighthouse engineer J.A. Hultman presented plans in spring 1928. The 31.44-metre-long, 6-metre-wide ship has seven cabins, two saloons, three mess rooms, a galley, a shower room and a cargo hold. Its association says these spaces are in good condition.

A coal-fired boiler and seven steam engines remain operational. The compound main engine is joined by steam engines for a generator, pumps and windlass, among other equipment. S/S Orion is classified as a steam salvage ship and is the oldest surviving vessel of its kind in Sweden. The Swedish Maritime Museums gave the ship heritage status in 2003.

S/S Orions Vänner, formed in 1992, runs youth activities aboard. The programme offers young people and adults a place to learn practical crafts in an environment free from racism, bullying and drugs. Public opening hours and admission prices are not listed.
