Tu madre / Din mamma opens at aliasTEATERN this Thursday and runs through 4 December. The play is in Swedish, with some Spanish, and moves between a Spain shaped by dictatorship, resistance and silence and a Europe in change. Its questions are direct: what do parents owe their children, what do children owe their parents, and what would someone sacrifice for a belief?
Two women meet again years after they were separated under Franco’s regime. Their family history of separation and silence gradually emerges. A mother chose political struggle over her child; her daughter, on the verge of becoming a mother herself, discovers that her life rests on a lie. Playwright Anna Azcárate drew on her real memories, including the resistance movement under Franco, to create a fictional but rooted story. For visitors interested in theatre about family, political commitment and the way history reaches into the present, those threads meet on stage here.
