Spritmuseum’s “True Crime” exhibition is open now, taking visitors into Stockholm’s prohibition-era underworld of the 1920s and 1930s. It follows smugglers, illegal distillers and bootleggers through the city’s dark harbours, narrow alleys, shady doctors’ offices and illegal nightclubs. The cases include “Storkevan”, whose illicit distillery exploded on Västerlånggatan, and smuggler Karl Georg Malmberg, who fitted a fog machine to his ship to mislead customs officers.
The exhibition examines how state restrictions made spirits harder to obtain while helping create an illegal market. It was produced with illustrator and author Jakob Nilsson and set designer Lehna Edwall. Visitors can also buy Spritjakten, a puzzle game that uses clues in the exhibition for missions set in 1920s Stockholm. Introductory tours are offered hourly every day and are included with admission.
