Play Beyond Play fills an entire floor of the National Museum of Science and Technology with game stations and imaginative game environments. Visitors can try games, explore their history and step into game worlds. The exhibition also tells the story of Sweden’s computer game industry and its role in the development of digital technology.
At Game Demo, visitors can test games still in development, including Pump the Frog, which uses a bicycle pump as a controller. Displays of gaming history include the Saab D2, described by the museum as Sweden’s first transistor-equipped computer, alongside classic machines such as the Commodore 64, Apple II and Atari Pong. A section explores cosplay, where people dress as characters from games and animated films. Visitors can also scan themselves, create an avatar and add it to the exhibition’s game world. The exhibition is scheduled to run through 31 December 2026.
