Färgfabriken is showing British-Nigerian artist Ndidi Dike’s “Rare Earth Rare Justice” in its Main Hall through 22 November. The exhibition is Dike’s first presentation in Sweden. It begins with the extraction of earth minerals and people, and considers how colonial and postcolonial structures shape economies and urban life.
Dike presents a new sculptural work in a spatial installation made specifically for the hall. One installation described in her artist statement uses a cylindrical display structure covered with photographs of markets in Lagos, London’s financial district and Peckham. The images bring trade and city life into a study of how resources and value move. Dike works mainly as a sculptor and also uses found objects, prints and spatial installations. Her work draws on research into political and economic questions, including how extractive industries can lead to resource conflicts, displacement and humanitarian crises. The exhibition will interest visitors looking at how art can connect physical materials with the histories behind global trade.
