Historiska museet’s exhibition brings costumes from three ballets into the Gothic Hall, among medieval sculptures and altarpieces. The works are Sankt Göran och draken (1976), De fåvitska jungfrurna (1920/1962) and Eurydike är död (1968). Costumes by Marie-Louise Ekman, Einar Nerman and Eva Ek-Schaeffer sit beside church art connected to the stories around them.
The exhibition traces how choreographers Mats Ek, Jean Börlin and Birgit Cullberg drew on older myths and religious motifs to address the questions, conflicts and ideas of their own times. Their work reshaped familiar stories of love, death and resurrection. Börlin made the Swedish Ballet one of the most prominent avant-garde companies in Paris in the 1920s. Cullberg and Ek, from different generations, renewed modern dance by giving classical stories relevance for their own time. Visitors interested in how dance and visual art interpret myths can see medieval imagery and Swedish dance history together.
