Rubinen’s support group is for young people aged 14 to 17 whose parent has a form of mental ill health. The weekly Thursday meetings are continuing this week and run into December in Norrtälje. Sessions cover topics including mental illness, feelings and defence mechanisms, personal boundaries and communication.
Participants meet others with similar experiences and learn ways to strengthen themselves and feel well while someone in their family is unwell. The organisers say they also make room for fun and for things that bring joy and strength, and tell participants that a parent’s illness is not the child’s fault. Elin Rydèn and Pernilla Henriksson, field coordinators with Norrtälje municipality, lead the group. Snacks are served. At least five participants must register for the group to start, and anyone under 15 needs a parent or guardian to confirm participation.
