Rubinen’s support group is for children and young people aged 9–13 whose parents have a mental illness or another form of mental ill health. The group meets in Norrtälje, with sessions scheduled from 29 September to 8 December. After the autumn holiday break, meetings resume on 3 November and continue through 8 December.
Sessions cover topics including mental illness, feelings and defences, personal boundaries and communication. Children meet others with similar experiences and learn ways to strengthen themselves and support their own wellbeing. The organisers also make clear that a parent’s poor mental health is not the child’s fault. The programme includes time for fun and discussion of things that bring happiness and strength. A snack is served. Maria Nordberg and Maria Klaréus, family-support consultants with Sjukvård och omsorg i Norrtälje, lead the sessions. Participation is free, but advance registration is required and must be confirmed by a parent or guardian.
