Julita skans is Arthur Bäckström’s open-air museum at Julita estate, named after Stockholm’s Skansen. Its buildings include the Skansen museum, the Skansen cabins and the Skansen church. Bäckström was influenced by the late-19th-century movement to preserve older rural customs and styles, and by Artur Hazelius, who created the Nordic Museum and Skansen in Stockholm.

After moving to Julita estate in the early 20th century, Bäckström built his own open-air museum and gathered around 7,500 objects, many bought at auctions in Södermanland. He moved cabins to Julita and altered them in a national-romantic style. Their interiors showed his collections and his interest in decoration, which he valued over strict historical accuracy.

The Skansen museum was completed in 1930, and the church was added two years later. The museum and church are timber buildings with shingle roofs, joined by a courtyard with a well. Some of the museum’s period rooms, arranged in styles from the 16th century to the late 19th century, survive today. Past displays also included tools and crafts such as hide-working and wallpaper printing.

The venue says Julita skans can be visited during its summer-season opening hours. Its stated visiting period is the summer season, rather than November.
