Ellen Key’s home Strand stands on Omberg, between Vadstena and Ödeshög. The house was built in 1910 and opens for guided tours during the summer season. Strand also provides summer accommodation for scholarship holders. It is closed for the 2026 season, which ran from 1 May to 30 September. Online booking for 2027 tours opens in January.
A visit is possible only with a guide; visitors cannot tour the house independently. The website directs visitors to its “Visit us” section for tour times.
Ellen Key wanted to establish a rest home at Strand for women doing physical labour. The rest home became a reality, and at her death she left her estate to the Ellen Key Foundation Strand, with instructions to run the rest home according to her wishes. The foundation says the old house needs substantial renovation and relies on admission fees, book sales and returns from the estate. Visitors can support its ongoing work with a donation.
Good to know
Book ahead: online booking for 2027 tours opens in January. Visits are guided only, and Strand is closed until the next summer season.
