Askersunds hembygdsgård is beside Askersund, with a view over Lake Alsen. The grounds are open year-round, including this week; the cottages are open in summer. The site opened in 1933 and brings together buildings moved from the area around Askersund. They include Klockargården, a customs cottage dating from the 1780s, a soldiers’ cottage from Rude and a sauna from Tiveden. Hallen, used for exhibitions, was built in 1993.
In summer, the cottages open and a small zoo has sheep, goats, chickens, ducks and rabbits. Outdoor stages host events. The covered stage can also shelter visitors eating a packed lunch. Guided tours are available on request.
Stadsparken nature reserve adjoins the grounds. Its walking and exercise trails run through woodland and clearings, with routes of different lengths. A 1.4-kilometre loop has an accessibility-adapted geocaching route with five hidden caches.
A mini train runs between Askersund harbour and the heritage site from the Monday after Midsummer until mid-August, and on September weekends when the weather is good. Groups can book it before or after the main season. The site information gives no visit duration or admission price.
Good to know
Guided tours are available on request. Groups can book the mini train outside its regular season; it runs in September on weekends only when the weather is good.
