Malmöhus is the oldest preserved Renaissance castle in the Nordic countries, according to Malmö city. The castle standing today was completed in the mid-16th century and still contains remains of Erik of Pomerania’s fortress from 1434. At Malmö Museum, visitors can explore exhibitions about the castle, including “Power over people”, “On the king’s orders”, the castle’s royal apartments, “Welcome to Sweden” and Myntergården.
The Danish kings stayed at Malmöhus during visits to Malmö. After Skåne became Swedish in 1658, the castle’s fortifications were strengthened. The fortress lost its importance in the 18th century and served as a prison from 1828 to 1909. Malmö Museum opened in the restored and converted building in 1937. In 1945, as the war ended, the museum was used as accommodation for people rescued from Nazi concentration camps.
Malmö city says the castle can be reached only by stairs. The city’s page does not give a current ticket price or opening hours.
