Kronhusbodarna is a group of 18th-century stone buildings around Kronhuset, one of Gothenburg’s oldest surviving buildings. The quarter is a few minutes’ walk from Nordstan and Gustaf Adolf’s Square.
The original wooden buildings burned in the major city fire of 1746 and were replaced by the stone buildings seen today. They were built as carriage houses, stores, a smithy and a workshop for the military.
Since the 1970s, the Kronhus quarter has been a cultural and craft centre. Visitors can browse shops and workshops with local crafts. The quarter also has a gallery, individual artisan workshops and a sweets shop selling old-fashioned sweets. Café Kronhuset offers breakfast, lunch and fika.
Kronhuset was originally used to store military uniforms and war equipment. In 1660, the four-year-old Karl XI was proclaimed king there. The building now houses Bagih, part of property company Higab, which offers a venue for cultural practitioners. Events and activities include festivals.
