Stora Saluhallen, or “the Big Market Hall,” is on Kungstorget in Gothenburg. Architect Hans Hedlund designed the hall, which was built between 1888 and 1889. Its stone, iron and glass structure has an interior glass ceiling supported by iron arches.
Around 40 shops, bars and restaurants are inside. Specialist food shops sell items such as cheese, meat, bread, coffee, chocolate and spices. The restaurants serve Swedish dishes and international food. Kajutan Saluhallen focuses on fish and seafood; other named places include the wine bar Bar Bulot, the bistro Salut and the sandwich shop Hasselssons Macklucka. Wine Mechanics is a local winery, and Gelaterian is a gelato café.
You can sit down for lunch or dinner, have a glass of wine, or stop for Swedish fika at cafés including Brogyllen and Steinbrenner & Nyberg. The hall is also a place to put together a picnic. The material gives no prices, opening hours or suggested visit length.
Trams and buses from the nearby Kungsportsplatsen and Grönsakstorget stops connect to large parts of Gothenburg. The hall’s website lists its traders and restaurants.
