Björlanda Church stands on Hisingen in Gothenburg, within Torslanda-Björlanda parish, a congregation of the Church of Sweden and part of the Evangelical Lutheran tradition. Its medieval sections probably date from the 12th or 13th century. The church describes itself as a medieval “Mary church”; its extra-high walls are associated with that designation.
The church’s dedication day is 15 July, according to a note in Bishop Eysteinn’s 14th-century land book. The dedication year is not known. The parish website offers a virtual tour. A parish hall stands a few hundred metres from the church; the building began as Björlanda’s old-age home.
The church says Norwegian-Icelandic sources place the Christianisation of Bohuslän under Olav Trygvasson in the late 10th century, but that no churches or other Christian memorials from that period survive. The church’s likely medieval parts date from later centuries. Wikidata gives 1301 as the church’s founded-or-opened date, while the church page leaves the dedication year unknown. Wikidata also lists the church as heritage-listed. The church page gives no admission price, public opening hours or visit duration.
