Älvåsen Nature Reserve is about 4km south of Hassela and covers 435 hectares. Its forested massif has steep slopes and summits above 400 metres. Trails range from routes to viewpoints to more demanding paths along old summer-pasture and timber-hauling tracks.
From the summit, a trail runs to the lookout at Stuthällan, winding through the forest around Högåsen. There is a wind shelter, a grill area and a place to sit at the viewpoint. The reserve’s visitor page says storms have left many fallen trees along the path to the shelter.
For a harder hike, start at Älvsjön and follow signs toward Fagernäs via Basvägen. The route descends 200 metres along a stream ravine between two summits. At the reserve boundary, about 2.5km in, hikers can continue downhill to Fagernäs or climb back toward Älvsjön on Vallstigen. The loop is just under 5km, but takes several hours because of the elevation changes. The trail beyond the reserve boundary is not maintained.
The reserve has spruce forest aged up to 250–300 years, with trees aged 400–500 years on the steep slopes. The visitor page lists the reserve as free to visit. It also describes the area as humid, with frequent fog and heavy precipitation, and labels it child-friendly. The Älvsjön loop is demanding.
Good to know
At Älvsjön, follow the signs toward Fagernäs via Basvägen. Take care if continuing beyond the reserve boundary, as that trail is not maintained.
