Damallsvenskan club Uppsala will fold after this season. Now there are concerns that more clubs could suffer the same fate. Many will have a tough time next year, says Jenny Hermansson, secretary general of Elitfotboll Dam (EFD, the Swedish women’s elite football organization).
FootballIK Uppsala’s women’s team is closing down its elite operations after the current season. Financial uncertainty ahead of next season is cited as the reason.
SportsTwo main sponsors have dropped out, and there is still no TV agreement for next season. Damallsvenskan (Sweden’s top women’s football league) risks losing up to 30 million kronor (about $2.9 million) in revenue, and the clubs could end up in financial crisis. That would be a disaster, says national team star Filippa Angeldahl.
